What are we looking to fulfill when we speed up? We don’t necessarily go outside to improve ourselves but when we slow down we are taking care of so much more than our bodies.
We’re not doing ourselves any favors by speeding up.
My kids just asked; why do old people drive so slow when they have less time on Earth? Time is a construct and you actually have more time when you slow down.
How does that work? Hike slowly and suddenly time will slow down as you take a full minute to look at a flower.
When you hike a trail very fast, you will realize how quickly time went as you hiked it. Suddenly the whole hike will be over and you’ll wonder where the time went. Gosh, it just seems like I started the hike and it is already over. But as you slow down, time sill start to stretch out before you. Evening will seem like it will never come as you stare at the clouds turning pink.
As we are allowing ourselves more time, we are also being kinder to our bodies and our minds. We are allowing both to breathe. Even though the mind doesn’t actually breathe its own oxygen, it does need some space and time to rest. We need to take the same care of our brains as we do our bodies.
Try slowing down your next hike.
